Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, 5ième Grand Cru Classé

Vintage 2006

A.O.C. Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is an estate on the up. Its success, as the welcoming Isabelle La Sueur told us, can be attributed to owner François-Xavier Borie, who since taking over from his father, has taken the estate from good to great. Xavier has rebuilt the cellars, installed smaller vats and instigated a more rigorous selection process.

The wines carry a hint of crème de cassis, which is the estate’s trademark characteristic in top vintages.

“The bouquet is curmudgeonly at first, dense and introverted with traditional blackberry, wild hedgerow and pencil box aromas. Very fine definition and lift. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grippy tannins, superb concentration with a touch of black pepper sprinkled over the dense black fruits that take aeons to unfurl. This is a brilliant wine from Xavier Borie but like all great GPL’s: think 20-years not five.” eRobertParker.com (Sep 2010)
